THEME & ITINERARY
This walk examines the nautical, horological and astronomical aspects of historic Greenwich. The whole area was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997. It is London’s time capsule. One of the most famous place names in world since Greenwich Mean Time was accepted as the centre of the world’s time zones in 1884.
Greenwich has a famous naval tradition: it was the Royal Navy HQ for 400 years, many voyages left from this shore of the Thames. So we start at the spiritual home of a ship, the name of which somehow, every London school-child knows: the Cutty Sark. It has the most extraordinary history. Greenwich was also the site of the Royal Navy hospital which we will be able to view.
We will see the remains of the Greenwich Palace, for 300 years the principle royal palace outside London, and the cradle, quite literally, of the Tudor dynasty: Henry VIII, Bloody Mary and the Virgin Queen were all born here.
Greenwich is famed for its buildings. According to one expert: ‘the finest collection of architecture in London’. Royal patronage ensured variety, and all the greats are represented: Wren, Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh, etc. We will visit in particular, the Queen’s House, designed by Inigo Jones in 1616, the first classical building in the country.
We can take a pleasant stroll in Greenwich Park and visit the Royal Observatory, built in 1675 by Sir Christopher Wren. Here we will find some of the answers to the mysteries of time. We also have the opportunity of straddling the exact line where the world’s east meets the world’s west.
Finally, we take a brief walk around the original Greenwich Village. Famous military residents of the area include General Wolfe and General Gordon. At the end of the walk there is a chance to visit the Maritime Museum or Royal Observatory (both free entry).
