THEME & ITINERARY
London is the capital of England, Great Britain and United Kingdom. It is the biggest city in Europe with a population of nearly eight million. For 2000 years of its history it has been a cosmopolitan melting pot. Today there are 1,000 different national communities and 300 different languages are spoken. How did it all come about? This walk examines, in chronological order, some of the main historic events in the development of one the world’s greatest cities.

We start at the River Thames with stories of the mysterious Celts before we move onto London’s Roman remains nearby. Next we look at a Saxon church, and also the Viking legacy. The Norman and Plantagenet dynasties take us onto medieval London.

Then, we move onto to another part of the city (note: A short trip by public transport may be necessary to save time). Here we find the monastery founded for monks to pray for souls of the Black Death. We find the place where the Peasants' Revolt came to a pointed end. The religious strife of the Reformation is also examined including the legend of Bloody Mary. How did the Great Fire start? We will find out. When was the ‘London mob’ at its most powerful? We will find out.

The effect of the Industrial Revolution and the Blitz on London are examined as we make our way to the Millennium Bridge. We have just covered 2,000 of years, yet from here we see aspects of 21st century London through its ever-changing skyline. Beneath us, the Thames, where we started: a 'silver thread through London’s history'. At the end of the walk there is an option to visit the Museum of London (free entry).
